Vegetable Garden Regulations

What to Do:

  • During summer months, harvest vegetables during the cooler hours: early morning or, even better, just before sunset (vegetables will be dry) and at least one hour after watering (they will be crispier and more turgid).
  • Depending on the type, fruit vegetables should be picked as soon as they reach the typical size and color of the cultivated variety, using only your hands or scissors to cut the stem.
  • Head leafy vegetables (e.g., chard, lettuce, etc.) should be picked when fully developed but still tender, cutting them at the base or pulling them from the ground with the root (to harvest bulbs and roots, gently loosen the soil all around and only then extract them: this way you’ll avoid damaging or breaking them). Cut-and-come-again salads should be cut at the base in stages, so they regrow multiple times.

What not to Do:

  • During vegetable harvesting, you must not damage/trample the plants, especially if they’re meant to produce for several more weeks.
  • Vegetables should be cleaned of damaged or dirty parts and unnecessary vegetation before being placed in storage containers. They should not be thrown into containers, nor should they be crushed against each other or handled excessively or roughly.
  • The harvest should not be left in the sun and heat, otherwise it will easily wilt and deteriorate.
  • Finally, an important recommendation: check that the plant protection products you use don’t require a safety period, meaning you don’t have to wait a certain number of days between their use and harvest time.

Warnings:

  • Don’t let children go into the field alone and don’t ask them to harvest by themselves!
  • Don’t pick melons and watermelons while they’re ripening!

We recommend harvesting products only for daily needs!
